The University of Arizona

Programs and Projects

We impact our community through programs and projects that make our neighborhoods, our state, and our region a better place to live, work, raise a family, and grow a business.

Here are some of them:

CTE Internships

If Southern Arizona is to maintain and augment its leadership position in the areas of solar and renewable energy, a skilled workforce is key. We’re working to develop that workforce and ensure it has the knowledge, skills, and abilities that solar energy companies are looking for.

Our partners in this effort include the UA College of Science, UA South, Biosphere 2, Pima County One Stop, Vail School District, and the Joint Technological Education District (JTED).

Border TEC Project

The Border TEC Project (BTEC) addresses national issues of border security, safety, trade and management along the US international border. BTEC is developing a third party testing and evaluation center to complement existing programs and research strengths of the University of Arizona and the emerging industry cluster in Southern Arizona.  Projects may be brought to BTEC by industry or government.

BTEC is located at the UA Tech Park, the largest US university research park along the US-Mexico border. It is close to several major ports of entry and major military installations. The Tech Park has sites that are adaptable for a variety of testing scenarios and can be replicated as ports of entry. The Park also has labs equipped with certified testing technology.

The Center will evaluate new and or existing technologies and will work to help commercialize new technologies with commercial potential through the Arizona Center for Innovation, a business incubator located at the Tech Park.

ESTEEM High School

Plans are progressing to develop a bioscience-focused high school on the campus of the UA Bio Park.  ESTEEM (Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Math) High School will provide exciting opportunities for students to fulfill their high school academic requirements while focusing on vocational and technological opportunities in the biosciences.

Tucson Unified School District and the Joint Technological Education District (JTED) are participating in the development of the new school.  Other organizations that support the project include Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities, Southern Arizona Leadership Council and Science Foundation Arizona.
